After 1999's unthinkable Columbine tragedy, law enforcement and communities nationwide grappled with the best ways to counter school violence and safeguard our academic facilities. Twenty years later – with our nation still reeling from Sandy Hook, Parkland and other violent acts – school shootings have sadly become part of the next generation's lexicon in a way that was once unimaginable.
SafeCon 2019 envisions a better future. Held this year in Orlando, Fla., November 19-20, SafeCon will deliver key findings and core recommendations on how to improve, change and/or eliminate systemic issues to prevent these tragedies. Informed by the state of Florida's recently completed in-depth review of 2018's Parkland school shooting, the event will cover insights on the incident and the response from law enforcement, as well as proposed security enhancements, police and school training, medical response protocols, and future student mental health and threat assessments.
Obviously of great national interest, SafeCon is a very powerful tool for improving school security practices. This first-of-its-kind, 2-day conference will include an exposition with capability providers that can assist law enforcement personnel, academic community members and government entities with their strategies to protect our schools. We expect 500 attendees from law enforcement, city administration and school administration, including human resources personnel, superintendents and board members.
Attendees will be looking to you for educational tools and resources on preventing school violence incidents. There will be sessions on preparedness, implementing best security practices, crisis communication, social media monitoring and more.According to the 2020 Florida Budget, Safe Schools Allocation will increase by $18,043,981 and Mental Health Assistance Allocation will increase by $5,762,714.
