Inventor and engineer Dr. Lonnie Johnson created the popular Super Soaker water gun, but his career and innovations have been part of aerospace engineering's most significant achievements as well as today's drive for new sources of energy to ensure a prosperous future for our world.

Inventor and engineer Dr. Lonnie Johnson holds more than 100 patents, the most popular of which is the Super Soaker water gun. Dr. Johnson began his career analyzing nuclear-powered space systems for the U.S. Air Force, and went on to serve at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory where he helped develop some of the nation's most advanced technological achievements including the Galileo mission to Jupiter, the Mars Observer Project, the Cassini Mission to Saturn, and the Stealth Bomber.

With a mission to ensure the world has enough energy for a prosperous future, his Johnson Battery Technologies (JBT) has become a leading developer of ceramic solid-state batteries. JBT's technology could change the paradigm for consumer electronic devices with more than twice the improvement over lithium-ion. JBT's sister company, Excellatron, is developing lithium-air batteries, which would enable an electric vehicle to potentially achieve1,000 miles on a single charge.

Dr. Johnson's third energy invention, the JTEC heat engine that converts heat directly into electricity, led to his receipt of Popular Mechanics' "Breakthrough Award."

In 2011, Dr. Johnson was inducted into the Engineering Hall of Fame by the State of Alabama. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, a master's in nuclear engineering and an honorary doctorate in science from Tuskegee University.
