Theme: Teaching and Learning Language in the Digital World

The Technology LEARN Workshop is open to instructors and course developers of all languages from any USG–affiliated institution. As the theme suggests, this LEARN Workshop is dedicated to the complexities encountered with technology integration in adult foreign language instruction as well as solutions and success stories. Presentations and Hands-on Workshops can focus on tools, technologies or resources.

The 2014 Technology LEARN Steering Committee invites submission of proposals on the topics relevant to the primary workshop theme "Teaching and Learning Language in the Digital World.” Subthemes for presentations may include but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Flexible Training for Language Professionals: Distance, Blended, Mobile, MOOCs, Cloud-based, Flipped, and others
  • Best Practices for Implementing Social Media and Gamification in Adult Language Education
  • Internet Resources for Language Technologies, Multimedia Tools, and Tradecraft
  • Open Educational Resources, Creative Commons, and Successful Navigation of Copyright Issues
  • Continuing Education: Technology Training for Teachers and Course Developers

Preference will be given to proposals with clearly defined applicability across a wide spectrum of languages.

Proposals may be for one of the following:

  • Individual or Joint Presentations – Topic-related presentations by one presenter or two co-presenters. Strictly limited to 25 minutes, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session.
  • Hands-On Technology Workshops – Technology-focused workshops by one presenter or two co-presenters. Strictly limited 30 or 60 minutes. Presenters will give brief overview and then lead group in hands-on session to demonstrate tools or innovative teaching strategies using given technology. Workshops will be limited to 15 people or less and are required to provide participants with maximum hands-on time.

All proposals must be submitted online at www.FBCconferences.com/LEARN by midnight EST on June 12, 2014 in the correct format. Confirmation of receipt will be emailed instantly upon successful submission. Presenters will be notified by email of the Review Committee’s decision by June 26, 2014.

Proposals must be submitted in English and in final publishable format. The submission should be print-ready in final publishable format. Use all punctuation, underlining, italics, etc. exactly as you want it to be printed in the program guide. All proposals must be written in third person format avoiding the use of "I" and "we." All accepted proposals will be printed in the LEARN Workshop Program Guide as submitted during the Call for Proposals; however, the LEARN Review Committee reserves the right to edit if necessary.

ONLINE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

It is important that you include all information requested when entering your submission in the online form.

TITLE: The topic should be relevant to the conference theme and current concerns of the profession. Maximum length for title is 12 words.

CONTENT DESCRIPTION: The description must clearly align with the content of the proposal and be in final, publishable format, free of any errors. The online submission system automatically limits the content description to a maximum of 200 words.

METHODS: Required for all presentation and courseware sharing session proposals. This section is limited to a maximum of 150 words and should indicate how information will be shared. Presentational modes must be specifically identified and highly engaging.

OUTLINE: Required only for Workshop submissions. Presenters are responsible for assuring that workshop participants will have direct access to all tools and technologies addressed in the workshop. WIFI is available throughout the facility.

  • Please include an outline of the proposed workshop, including a schedule for each topic addressed or activity performed.
  • Please specify if you prefer a 30-minute or 60-minute timeslot and if your workshop can be Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) or will require lab space. If BYOD, please specify device(s): laptop, tablet, smartphone.

SUBMISSION, REVIEW, ACCEPTANCE PROCESS

After submitting a proposal, the primary presenter will be emailed a confirmation along with login information. Presenters may log in and make edits or changes to their proposals until the submission deadline, June 12, 2014. Once the deadline passes, all submissions will be placed in “review” mode and will not be accessible for further editing. The reviewers will make their acceptance decision based on what is in the system on the closing date.
